Greenland Film Institute

A film industry on Greenlandic terms

Greenland is at the beginning of a new chapter in our film history. With the establishment of the Greenland Film Institute, we have a unique opportunity to create the framework that our filmmakers have been missing for many years.

Our ambition is not only to strengthen film production financially, but to create a sustainable foundation where Greenlandic filmmakers can develop, tell their own stories and create a professional career – without being forced to adapt to systems that have been developed for completely different countries and industries.

Too often, success is measured by international standards and criteria that are created for markets with millions of inhabitants, large production environments and completely different production conditions. These criteria do not reflect the reality in Greenland.

We must therefore have the courage to think differently. We must develop our own models for support, talent development and production – models that are based on our geography, our language, our culture and the special challenges and opportunities that characterize Greenlandic film.

A strong film institute should not be a copy of institutions in other countries. It must be an institution created by Greenland and for Greenland.

When we invest in Greenlandic filmmakers, we are also investing in our culture, our identity and our future stories. Film is not just entertainment – it is a language that shapes how we see ourselves and how the world sees us.

I want the Greenland Film Institute to become a driving force for a film industry where Greenlandic stories can grow on their own terms. An industry where talent is met with opportunities, where creativity is supported by strong frameworks, and where together we build a sustainable future for Greenlandic film – not by copying others, but by creating our own path.
